  Prologue

"Haylee? Leave Daddy alone, baby. He needs to sleep," Baylor Paterson said to the tiny black-haired, blue-eyed child, who was pointing at the snoring main with a chubby finger.

"Dadda!" she announced happily, her dimples pronounced on either side of the toothy smile.

Baylor lifted the child in her arms. "Yes, that's Daddy. He's tired and you need to stop poking him in the eye. Let's put you back in here with your sister."

"Jass!" the little one declared, again lifting her short, fat finger and poking the other child in the nose.

With a smile, Baylor sat on the floor next to the twins' playpen. "Yes, that's Jaycee. Can you give her a hug?"

Two big pleading green eyes looked up with the same pathetic expression that Baylor had seen every time she asked for help changing diapers. The one that begged, 'Please, Mommy, anything but that!' There was no escape as the more gregarious of the two infants wrapped her fat little arms around her twin's neck and squeezed, while the other one 'took' it before releasing a bloodcurdling scream for the hug to stop.

"Haylee loves her sister, doesn't she?" Baylor said softly.

"Almost as much as her daddy does. Why are they in baby jail? Did they finally wear you down?"

  "Dadda!"

"Wear me down? I'm Supermom, remember? You guys couldn't last five minutes alone with these little angels before begging for help, and you know it," Baylor snickered. "Yeah, I'm worn out."

"You haven't been sleeping very well lately, either. You need a vacation." Hayden leaned over to kiss Baylor before rescuing his imprisoned little daughters and pulling them both up to kiss their chubby cheeks.

"I'm just having weird dreams about stupid things. No biggie."

Two little index fingers poked at his eyes, nose and mouth. "Is this a new thing?" he asked, gently nibbling on the two fingers.

"That's the main reason why they are in baby jail. They started this poking thing this morning. Jake was their first victim, and got stuck in both eyeballs as soon as he got home. They tackled him, and took him down like two running backs on a football diamond."

"Sweetheart, I love you, but you need to stop trying to use sports to explain things. Linebackers do the tackling, and baseball has a diamond while football has a field. Either way, the poor guy looks like he's been through the wringer. The kids kept him up yesterday while you were on assignment, and then he had a tough shift last night."

"I was only gone for two hours. They were sleeping when I left."

"I know, but they never stay asleep when we watch them. We don't have the magic touch of mommy. Plus, they are double trouble." He kissed his daughters' cheeks again.

"Didn't you say something a while back that things are always better when they come in pairs?" She grinned.

"Remind me of this the next time I say anything like that. I don't know how you do it all the time, honey."

"Lots of experience with raising my brothers and sisters."

A snore from the couch made the toddlers turn their pointing fingers in Jake's direction. "Poor guy," Hayden said softly as he looked over at his sleeping step-brother. "What time did he get in?"

"Not until after lunch. The department made him stay to complete paperwork because a drunk who thought a car chase would be fun decided to plow into the side of a bridge and kill himself. Jake was so tired, he had a patrol car take him home instead of riding his motorcycle."

"Good. I'm glad he used some sense. Fatherhood seems to have made him more conscious of his own safety," Hayden declared, bouncing the little girls in his arms and happily accepting the curious fingers that continued to poke mercilessly at him.

Baylor sighed, looking down at her sleeping second husband. Being in a poly household did not just mean more work, it meant more worries. Recently, the worries felt like they multiplied daily. "I wish he would take a desk job," she muttered.

"No, babygirl, you wish he would stay home and never leave."

"If I could have that wish, it would be for all four of you. The babies and their mama need their daddies, uncle and big brother around. I've been feeling a bit overwhelmed lately."

"What Mama needs is a hot bath, my sleeping potion and a good massage. I'll take care of the girls while you go take a break."

"Are you sure? You just got home from work and must be pooped," she said warily. "I miss you guys. We have so little time together. With the twins becoming mobile and Haylee learning to climb out of her playpen, the work has been non-stop."

Hayden leaned over to kiss her forehead. "You need some Daddy time, Ladybug. Jake and I are off next weekend. Let's have Terry and Matt watch the kids and the three of us can get away for a long overdue vacation."

  "A whole weekend? I don't know…"

"Bay, the twins are a year old now, and you have not left them for more than a few hours at a time, even for your photography assignments. The guys are the best babysitters on the planet, and you know it."

"I just feel so guilty. You know that my mother used to leave us alone all the time, and I don't want to do that with our children—"

"Sweetheart, you need some time away to recharge," he interrupted her. "Jake and I also need some alone time with you. It's been two months since the three of us have had intimate time together."

"And that night ended with you two getting up to take care of two little temper tantrums," she said with a light laugh.

"Yeah, it kind of spoiled the mood." He laughed back. "Seriously, we need that connection with you. As for leaving the girls with sitters, I swear that this is nothing like what your mother used to do. You aren't running off to go drinking and smoking dope, nor are you leaving them unsupervised by an adult. T-bear and Matt are part of their family, just like Jake and I am. They would give their lives for these girls and you know it."

Looking into his brown eyes, she nodded. He was right. "Okay, but only for one night."

"No, it will be for two nights and three days. You aren't nursing them anymore, so you can't use that as an excuse. Right, my mini-me's?" he asked the babies, his mouth again filled with two little hands. They squ
eaked happily at the nickname.

  "One night and two days."

"Nope. This is not open for negotiation. What?" He put his ear to Jaycee's mouth and then to Haylee. "Really? The girls said you've been really cranky, and that their daddies have some spanking to do!"

"They did not. And no spanking. Just loves."

He ignored her. "They also said that they really want some time to terrorize their uncles, and that they want a bunch of that brown gooey stuff they like so much."

"The garlic pinto beans? Oh no, that would be cruel. It would…"

"Ah," he shook his head and offered an evil grin, "don't argue. You have obviously forgotten what being ravaged feels like, and it's time that we remind you. Now march your bottom upstairs and soak in the tub until you turn into a prune. I will bring you my special cocktail and a plate of Terry's chocolate chip cookies."

"Mmm, chocolate sounds so sinfully good right now. Just no alcohol, please."

  "No?"

"I'm not in the mood. Certain things aren't sitting well with me lately," Baylor admitted.

"Stress will do that, baby. I'll make you a magic potion of warm milk, cinnamon, honey, and a slab of butter. It will knock your little ass out. Now go."

  "But—"

"See this?" He tapped his chin. "Mr. 'Serious Face'? I expect you to listen to me, young lady. That means no more lip. Mind me."

"Yes, Daddy," she sighed, kissing him after capturing two little pointing fingers in her hands. She nibbled the tips of both and then climbed wearily up the stairs.

Sinking back into the creamy bubbles, Baylor released a loud sigh, remembering her first night in the neighborhood and how Hayden had come to help her move. It seemed so long ago. She closed her eyes and smiled, musing over how much her life had changed since she'd met this odd little family.

First, her lovers; Hayden, the easy going Search and Rescue officer with the sexy British accent and wild, animalistic sexuality that left her deliciously sore; and his step-brother Jake, the serious and overprotective CHP motorcycle cop who always made her feel safe and secure, and whose gentle lovemaking both surprised and satiated her. They had given her everything a woman could desire, and filled the needs of the little girl inside as her daddies—helping her grow in confidence and renewing her ability to love. Then there was Terry; the retired medic with a heart of gold, who'd stepped into the role of doting uncle and nurturer. He was strict with her health and tolerated very little nonsense, and yet she had a closeness to him that was different than the others. Finally, Jake's oldest friend, and Terry's partner; Matt. They called him their 'resident hippie', but she loved him as a big brother. Together, she and Matt had plotted mischief which had left one—or both—of them facing the business end of their partner's paddle on many occasions.

She loved these men and her beautiful babies with a passion that most people only dream about, grateful to each for the miracle that her life had become.

She opened her eyes as Hayden cupped his hand on her cheek and handed her a glass of his 'magic potion'. "Here you go, sweetheart. Take your time. I promise to take care of the girls while you rest."

  "Are you sure?"

"We are manly men, remember? We can handle a dozen sets of twins, play ping pong, and still have enough energy to make love to you until you pass out."

"Thank you." She kissed his palm. "Thank you for everything."

"You look teary. Are you okay?"

"I'm just a little under the weather, otherwise I'm perfect. I love you."

He kissed her and left her to lean back in the tub to relax. She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply, recalling the first bath she'd had in that very tub. Hayden had brought her a plate of Terry's chocolate chip cookies and his special 'potion', and had had to wake her up because the water had grown cold. He had then brushed her hair and tucked her into Jake's bed, where she slept better than at any time in her life. The sounds of men downstairs had awakened her the next day… and marked the beginning of her life with this family.

The sounds from back then were very different to what she heard at the moment. She smiled at the loud screech, followed by two babies crying and the low male voices trying to quiet them. Sipping the 'potion', Baylor then closed her eyes and drifted into the bubbles.

  Chapter One

  Approximately 18 months earlier…

"I can't believe we're going to have a baby," Hayden said, placing his hand on Baylor's flat tummy. They were trembling with excitement. "When are we due?"

"We're guessing that I am due right before Thanksgiving." Baylor chuckled, placing her hand over his. "I'm only about eight weeks along right now."

"And we can still have sex, right?"

"Is that all you ever think about?" Jake reprimanded his brother. He kissed Baylor's hand. "How long did the doctor say that it was okay for us to spank you?"

"Talk about being single-minded!" Hayden exclaimed.

"The doctor said we can do everything we are used to but we should avoid any significant jarring, especially to the belly. So, no pressure on the tummy," Baylor replied. "He also said that I might be more sensitive, moody, and that we need to be keeping an eye on my blood sugars and blood pressure. He's worried about hypertension because of my history."

"We will certainly keep a close eye on you. So much that you will probably be pulling your hair out or wanting to punch one of us in the nose." Jake laughed. "This is so amazing. It feels like the news is just settling in."

"Well, with your dad visiting and all the stuff that's happened recently, neither of you have really had the chance to embrace it until now. What are you doing, Hayden?" Baylor asked as he pressed an ear to her stomach.

"Listening. The baby said to work on getting mommy nice and chubby so that the daddies will have more to spank."

"You'll have more than enough." She sighed again. "Are you guys really happy with this?" She touched her stomach.

"Deliriously so." Jake nodded, as did his brother. "We've been wanting kids forever, and can't wait until we can actually hold them. Terry thinks that they might be twins. Wouldn't that be great?"

"You've obviously never been around twins." Baylor laughed. "My mother had two sets—and, trust me, they are double trouble."

"We are manly men," Hayden announced, flexing a muscle. "We can handle a dozen of them without even blinking an eye. Besides, all good things come in pairs."

"I'll remind you of that one day. Now a serious question. Are you boys going to go back and help your dad pack for his move here? He wants to do it as soon as possible."

"Don't remind us," Jake groaned, wrapping his right arm around her shoulders. "I know he said that his new house was on the other side of the neighborhood, but that is still walking distance. Too close for comfort if you ask me."

"I'm glad that he will be close. It will be good for all of us."

"I love the old man, but he's going to drive me crazy. He is so controlling!"

"Is that where you inherited it from? You two are exactly alike, which is why I adore him," Baylor said and giggled. "I also enjoy being spoiled and he does a damn good job."

"No swearing." Jake tapped her lips. "You just said that we are still allowed to spank you, remember?"

"That brings up something that we wanted to talk with you about," Hayden said, his voice registering discomfort. "You're pregnant."

"Really?" Baylor let her hands fly to her mouth, feigning shock. "I am? How did that happen?"

  "This is serious."

She sobered up. "It sure looks that way. Jake? Why is Hayden giving me Mr. 'Serious Face'? Am I in trouble again? I ate everything on my plate, and have been following that stupid prenatal vitamin regime that makes my stomach cramp and constipates me."

"We have a solution for that. Literally," Hayden commented.

"No enemas! That is one reason why Terry is making me drink so much cranberry juice, and I hate the stuff. What's going on? I know that look. You are both going into daddy mode."

  "You
are absolutely right. Come and give Daddy loves, babygirl," Jake said.

Baylor obeyed, cuddling up in his arms and clutching the stuffed bear he handed her. "You aren't in any trouble, unless you've done something we haven't found out about," Hayden said with a crooked smile. She shook her head. "Good, that's a first! We wanted to talk to you about getting married."

"This isn't really a discussion that proper daddies would have with their Little, you know," she scolded.

"True, but we're both feeling a bit parental right now, given the mini-me that's brewing in there. Besides, you are more compliant when you're in the Little mindset," Jake acknowledged.

"Compliant? You both decided that Hayden would marry me and that I would be registered as your domestic partner," she told Jake. "Have you changed your minds? You can change it, I mean, it isn't like there's a ring on my finger." She tried to hide the fear in her voice.

"Changed our minds? Hell no, we have not changed our minds. We just made a promise, and should have talked to you about it beforehand. It's my fault for assuming that you would be okay with it. I'm sorry," Hayden said.

"We both assumed, Hayden. You can't take all the responsibility for this. As for that ring, we are waiting for the right time to spring it on you. It all happened rather fast, remember?" Jake asked, elbowing her. "So, here's the thing. After our divorces; meaning Hayden and I with our ex and Terry with his, we all made a pact that, if we ever decided to remarry, we would be part of each other's ceremony."

"There is nothing wrong with that. I would have expected it, considering how close you all are," Baylor said.

Hayden rubbed his neck. "It goes a bit deeper than that. It sounds weird, but we wanted to join our households together; not just the couple… but like a community marriage."

  "Say what?"

"What I'm saying is that we promised Terry and Matt a double wedding if the opportunity arose. They haven't said anything about any of this, but it's been on my mind a lot. I should have said something in the beginning when we started getting close. This is all on me, Bay."
