Chapter One
Tralec gripped the chair of the cruiser, forcing himself to breathe slowly in lieu of losing his dinner. Next to him, his pod-brother Troy laughed cheerfully.
“Now, that was a ride! You look sick.”
“I am sick, you moron. No one, and I mean no one in their right mind enjoys streaming,” Tralec groaned, his shaking hand reaching for a canister.
“I love streaming,” Troy laughed.
“I rest my case,” Tralec said, taking a deep drink. “The Calipian body is not designed to slip between dimensions and travel at time speed. It’s unnatural.”
“You’re the scientist. You would know,” Troy chuckled, downing a canister of his own. “Remind me, bro… what’s the plan?”
“The council gave us five solar days on Terra to observe the species in its natural habitat. We are here as anthropologists, not to play. My particular interest is in their reproduction activities. Since we do not concern ourselves with such a process on Calipi, I thought it would be something different and unique to learn.”
“Such an inconvenience, using the body to grow offspring. Plus, they aren’t matched with a podling. How do they survive?” Troy asked, maneuvering the ship toward the tiny blue and green planet that was third from Solaris.
“From what I can gather, they find mates and then reproduce recklessly. Mastering several of their languages was easy compared to understanding the different cultures these aliens live in. There is no consistency at all. I understand that there are even episodes of people who live alone!”
“You are kidding me, right? How can that be?” Troy had an expression of genuine concern over his strong features. “They don’t die?”
“Some do, but not because they are alone. This species is truly a scientist’s dream. You and I, brother, are about to indulge in learning about them.”
“You are like a podling being loosed in a playground for the first time,” Troy chuckled. “I am glad to see you so happy. So where do we start? It is a large planet with many different environments.”
“Our information of this world is so limited that we cannot determine the ideal place to begin. I think that it would be best to randomly choose a region. A warm region, please. I do not enjoy being cold. Pick a coordinate and find us a remote area where we can land unseen. I don’t want to frighten them while we observe.”
“Can we touch? The pictures you’ve shown me indicate that some of them are very beautiful to look at.”
“No touching. And definitely, no gleeming! Keep your tools in your pants,” Tralec said firmly.
“Can we do that to them? Are they physically capable of accepting our tools and receiving pleasure?”
“I don’t know. I hope to find some manuals while we are here to help understand them better. This is a new world, Troy. And new discoveries to be made. This can be the opportunity to secure our work for the council.”
“Learning to pleasure aliens? That would be wonderful if they provide more excitement than our females,” Troy teased, locking the controls as he skirted to the darker side of the planet and began to monitor the surface for a place to land.
“You are impossible. Let’s just get down there and begin. We have very little time this trip,” Tralec sighed, his fingers again digging into the seat as they entered the planet’s atmosphere.
Troy darkened the ship so that their passage would not be easily observed and headed toward a mountainous valley of moderate temperatures. “Ready for folding,” he announced.
“I hate space travel,” Tralec groaned as the ship began to fold in half and take on a vertical form before spinning backward and causing its occupants to sit facing the night sky.
“Lucky thing for you that I’m such a great pilot. Landing now, hold on.”
Tralec closed his eyes, feeling the effect of flying backwards and then abruptly stopping as Troy placed the cruiser in a narrow space between several large boulders.
“You can breathe, brother,” Troy teased, flicking on the cabin’s lights and releasing the safety harnessing from their seats.
“I need fresh air. Where’s the colony?” Tralec choked out, trying to recover his stomach.
“There are several small structures within walking distance from here. I assumed you wanted to observe the more sparse colonies before you ventured to the high populations.”
“You know me well. Yes, this will allow us to focus and give us some time to find learning materials. Ready?”
“Yep. Just one more canister and I’m good to go,” Troy said, taking another hearty draught from the metal container that held base nutrients.
“You act like you actually like that garbage,” Tralec shuddered.
“I do! Plus, anything is better than your food duplication.”
“I doubt that. Let’s go.”
The two exited the ship and stretched, taking a moment to allow their violet eyes to adjust to the dim light. Terra was not much different from Calipi, with a variety of climates, heavy influence of water, and similar gravitational pull and atmosphere.
“Do you want to remind me how we got chosen for this study?” Troy asked as they began to pick their way toward the closest structure.
“How many times have I told you?” Tralec groaned in frustration. “The council accepted my proposal based on the uniqueness of this civilization. None of the other anthropologists was interested in the reproductive lifestyles, only in their government structures. The Council of Scientific Discovery gets bored very quickly and they found my ideas refreshing.”
“That and Leeza wants you in her bed,” Troy teased, elbowing his pod-mate.
“Leeza is old enough to be my grand-mentor and is one of our oldest and most intimate friends. But yeah, that certainly helped,” Tralec grinned.
Troy used a device to direct them toward a small, shiny structure that sat in the middle of an open field atop a plateau. He beckoned to Tralec and pointed. “There is a human over that pass. Alone. I’m not picking up any others in the structures in this direct area.”
“Don’t let it see you. Shhh,” Tralec whispered, picking his way after his pod-mate.
Troy pointed to the mass on the ground. “Is it sleeping? Why expose itself to the elements and the wildlife? Don’t they have survival instincts?”
“I don’t know,” Tralec said, narrowing his eyes in the direction of the cloth-covered heap. “Troy? I think it might be injured. Look how erratic its breathing pattern is.”
“Let’s leave it alone, then. I don’t want to be bitten.”
“This species isn’t equipped for physical defense. They are mental creatures. By its size, it appears to either be a small female or a child.”
“Child?”
“Podling. Immature and needing of protection,” Tralec explained. “Look carefully. Do you see how long its
hair is? It is also difficult to see, but it looks like there are breasts as well. They rise and fall with the breathing. This must be an adult female.”
The pair looked down at the still body. Her skin was deathly pale and clammy from shock, and she muttered unintelligently as she shivered.
“It’s dying,” Troy said sadly, squatting to look at the woman. “It’s really pretty too. Do they all have different colors on their faces like that?”
“No,” Tralec said softly, joining him. “This female had been hurt badly. She will die soon if no care comes.”
“You aren’t thinking…?”
Tralec wasn’t thinking as he carefully scooped the tiny figure into his long arms. “Let’s get her back to the ship and see if we can help. I can’t stand to see any living thing suffer.”
“I’m right behind, bro.”
Tralec laid the unconscious woman on his sleeping bunk and reached for cleansing towels. Carefully, he wiped the grime from her face, studying the angry multicolored marks along her cheekbones and the side of her head. Her arm hung limply and at an odd angle.
“She is so cold. She must have been outside without significant covering for a long time. I wonder what type of beast got hold of her,” Troy said softly, helping his pod-mate cut away the clothing that surrounded the injured appendage.
“It is a beast I would not mind you hunting down. This poor thing must be in so much pain. Her limb is cracked.”
“Can we use the regenerator on her?”
“I think so. Their DNA is not much different from ours. Besides, she has nothing to lose at this point. Steady her arm for me, please.”
Tralec placed electrodes along the area of the fracture and slowly activated the machine. A three-dimensional image appeared above it, spontaneously changing angles as it stimulated the bone repair.
“Is it working?” Troy asked anxiously.
“Yes. We will still need to immobilize the arm for several hours to allow the muscles to adjust to the new bone. The sleeping gas should help to restore her. It will take more time for those superficial marks to fade. It appears as though she also has a head injury, but I can’t evaluate that until she awakens. I am not certain how the human restoration process works. Her complete healing might take several weeks.”
“Several weeks? But we are only here for five solar days… Tralec! You really aren’t serious, are you?” Troy gawked. “You? The one who is never spontaneous is actually considering the possibility of bringing this thing home with us? The council will shred you!”
“It is alone, severely injured, hypothermic, and appears to be significantly underweight. It is going to die if someone doesn’t take care of it. The council will understand. Plus, it will give us the chance to study the species in a more intimate environment.”
“The council is not going to buy into this, Tralec,” Troy said seriously. “They did not send us here to abduct Terra’s inhabitants.”
“Humans call this planet Earth. We are not abducting—we are rescuing. I want to go back to that shelter and see if we can find anything to help us learn how to care for it.”
“Should we leave it here alone?”
“We should try to get in the habit of referring to it by her gender. I doubt she will wake anytime soon, but I’ll put her in sleep-mode as a precaution. She is going to be terrified when she awakens as it is.”
“I would be too if I woke up and saw your ugly face,” Troy teased.
Tralec raised his eyebrow, looking into the eyes that were identical to his. Pod-mates were grown from a single cell and then split to form two identical entities. They were designed to be a life-pair, both with strengths and abilities to complement the other in the position they were bred for. Tralec was the scientist… brilliant, patient, and curious. Troy was the warrior… instinctive, fearless, and adventurous. Tralec followed his mind, while Troy followed his orders. Usually…
The pair had been built for the specific purpose of research. They stood at an average height and build for their kind. At 7′10″, they were lean and muscular, with pale blond hair, violet eyes, and skin that screamed for a touch of golden sunlight. At a glance, they could be easily mistaken for Earth’s Swedes, albeit very tall ones.
There were other physical differences as well, unique to their species. Besides a slightly different placement of their internal organs, they were by all intents and purposes viewed as asexual. Natural reproduction had long been eliminated from the race, and females were no longer equipped with the body parts to germinate offspring. Eggs were synthesized from select DNA and grown in womblike pods to be raised by mentors until they reached the age of maturity.
Another difference was the genitalia. Since the sexual act was strictly for pleasure, the scientists found a means to enhance the experience for the subjects involved. The males were equipped with double organs, sans testicles, each able to act independently and adjust its size and girth for optimum penetration. There was also a vestigial flap of muscled material that rested above the top penis. In some of the males, it functioned to stimulate the partner if she was equipped with a clitoris. It was rarely used, however, since the majority of sexual partners were automated biodrones—lifelike machines programmed to act as the rudimentary lover for pod-mates.
Tralec and Troy had F101-12. She was rarely used by either for sexual pleasure and served the purpose of maintaining their living quarters and taking care of the basics when the pair was not out exploring the universe. Both preferred the feel of real female flesh and easily attracted females with their handsome features. Unfortunately, females like the elderly councilwoman and mentor-prime Leeza were included in that attraction. This attraction was born out of the need to obtain pleasure that she was unlikely to experience, for Leeza, like the majority of other Calipi women, lacked the sexual organs to completely enjoy the act.
“If you are done insulting me, I suggest we get moving before the monster that attacked this poor thing returns,” Tralec said dryly.
“Don’t be so sensitive when I insult you.”
“For your edification, I will remind you that we are identical clones. You insult yourself when you insult me.”
“Yes, but I am not a big baby about it.”
“You don’t even know what a baby is,” Tralec grumbled, grabbing his carry bag.
“I’ve read about them,” Troy said defensively, following him outside. “They are prematurely hatched podlings in need of full care. They cry and complain constantly, require full supervision for their safety, and sound like a general pain in the ass.”
“And do you know what an ass is?” Tralec asked, crinkling his eyes.
“One definition is that it some sort of animal. The other refers to our resting platform. I will assume that you are referring to the latter.”
“Yes, and as far as being a general pain in the ass, you have succeeded in being one yourself. A baby is also an innocent, helpless creature that requires nurturing and patience.”
“Well, I think…”
“Just shut up and start looking for some sort of manual or instruction tablet on how to care for this female. We don’t have a lot of time,” Tralec ordered.
“Grouch,” Troy said humorously. They ducked inside the small trailer, their hulking forms barely able to maneuver in the tight confines as they sifted through stacks of trash and dirty clothes. Tralec wrinkled his nose, muttering how these people needed a biodrone, while Troy began stuffing piles of garbage into large plastic bags that he had found stuffed under a chair.
“What are you doing?” Tralec asked as Troy tied a knot in the bag he had filled to the brim.
“Cleaning. I loathe disarray. What’s that?” He pointed to a small, flat device resting on the end of a broken table.
“Not sure. It might be some sort of communicator… oh!” Tralec exclaimed as the screen flashed before him. “It has manuals in it! Look!”
“Take it with you. Maybe you can get some answers as to how to help our little human. Let’s
get out of here. This mess makes me want to scrub my skin off,” Troy said, shuddering.
Once back at the cruiser, Tralec inserted the tablet into the computer scanner and pressed several buttons to access the contents of the device. His brow furrowed in concentration as he interfaced mentally with the computer system, introducing the alien device and giving it time to assimilate the information contained. Once the ship’s computer recognized the tablet, Tralec directed the machine to provide listings of the manuals according to content and number of times accessed.
“They are all in one language, which I assume is the one this female uses. Troy? I think we are onto something. They are more of a sexual race than we anticipated. All these manuals are about how to perform human sexual encounters and the treatment of females in differing circumstances. This specimen seems to favor the works of one particular author,” Tralec spoke aloud, skimming through the listings. “She also has numerous instructions on an activity called age-play.”
“What’s that?”
“I am not certain, but it looks like it’s a means to raise and care for the adult human female. According to these manuals, we are to treat her like a child.”
“What? I don’t know anything about raising a child!” Troy exclaimed with a slight degree of panic evident in his voice.
“Me neither, but we have all these manuals to help us. The device indicates the number of times the contents were accessed, so I will start by reading the most-used references. I can then piece together an instruction sheet for both of us to follow. It might take a while to find what works best for the three of us, but we can do it. Are you in?”
“As long as it doesn’t get me fired from the field, I’m all yours.”
“It would help if you learned to read this language with more fluency,” Tralec hinted.
“Why bother? I’ll just have it translated and anything I don’t understand, I’ll ask you. Don’t start pestering me. You are the brains. I am the brawn.”
